Planning update:
Project MoDEL will see the development of an integrated, state-of-the art anchor site at RAF Northolt.
Through MoDEL, service men and women, soldiers and sailors will be re-housed in high quality accommodation at RAF Northolt, which will be given a £180 million facelift, and contribute to the drive to deliver a 21st century defence estate. As part of Project MODEL, VSM Estates will deliver much-needed new accommodation and facilities at RAF Northolt for approximately 1,000 military and civilian personnel following the relocation of existing London-based units to the base. This significant investment will be funded by delivering new housing and other uses at six accessible and sustainable sites in London that are now surplus to MOD requirements.
Work to redevelop RAF Northolt got underway in August 2006 with the construction of the vital North – South Link Road. Building construction started in earnest in January 2007, and a number of buildings are now nearing completion, including brand new accommodation for 222 Junior Ranks and 40 officers, as well as five new hangers, offices for 32 Squadron, offices and archive facilities for Air Historical Branch and Defence Aviation Safety Centre and a fire station. VSM Estates has also successfully constructed and handed over a new all weather sports pitch for use by service people.
2008 will see the demolition of a number of existing buildings in order to construct a further seven facilities at RAF Northolt, including more new accommodation for service people. Work this year will also include the complete refurbishment of the existing Officers Mess, which is a listed building. Work is on schedule for completion towards the end of 2009.
