Planning update:
Central to Project MODEL, VSM Estates is undertaking the development of an integrated, state-of-the-art anchor site at RAF Northolt. Through MODEL, service men and women are being re-housed in high quality accommodation at RAF Northolt, which is being given a £180 million facelift, and is contributing to the drive to deliver a 21st Century defence estate.
Work commenced at RAF Northolt in August 2006 and the first phase of the construction programme wascompleted in summer 2008. Fifteen new facilities were delivered under Phase 1 including: new accommodation for Junior Ranks and Officers - 309 rooms in total; welfare facilities; a new five-bay Hangar; a new building to house the Air Historical Branch and the Directorate of Aviation Regulation & Safety; the new British Forces Post Office facility and a new Fire Station.
Phases 2 and 3 of the construction programme are running concurrently and both are due to complete in 2010. There are a number of new facilities being built during these phases, and the majority of these will accommodate units relocating from RAF Uxbridge. The closure of RAF Uxbridge will constitute the biggest group of units moving to RAF Northolt as part of Project MODEL in any one phase.
Phase 2 includes the refurbishment of the Officers Mess and the construction of the new guardhouse, both of which were completed and handed over in April 2009. Some of the other facilities included in this phase are a new Police station; a new armoury; a new Junior Ranks Mess and a new Medical and Dental building.
Phase 3 will deliver new offices for Queens Colour Squadron; more Junior Ranks Single Living Accommodation; a new Support Wing building; a new Physical and Recreational Training Centre and new accommodation for HQ Music Services. The delivery of the HQ Music Services building will represent a key milestone for Project MODEL as the end of Phase 3 construction.
A lot has been achieved at RAF Northolt since Project MODEL commenced.
